Eddie Bernard, Ph.D.
Eddie has served as Director of the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, one of NOAA's Oceanographic Research Laboratories, since 1983. He directs a broad range of oceanographic research programs including tsunami research. Dr. Bernard has been personally and actively engaged in tsunami research and operations since 1970. He has served as Director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, founding chair of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, and chair of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics’ Tsunami Commission. He was awarded the Department of Commerce Gold Medal for establishing a NOAA tsunami forecasting system and the Tsunami Society Award for outstanding and original contributions to the science of tsunami hazards.
