I received a Bachelor's degree in physics from the University of California in 1992 and a Master's in Physical Oceanography from the University of Washington in 1996, and have been a principal investigator with the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research (NCTR) in Seattle since 2005.

I currently study tsunami inundation modeling both for the operational tsunami forecast system, and for hazard assessment. I am the author of the Community Model Interface for Tsunami: a tool that allows people in remote areas to use the operational NOAA tsunami model, and I teach "ComMIT" workshops throughout the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions giving people the tools they need to create critical evacuation maps and insight into the dynamics of tsunamis to identify hazardous inundation zones along their coastlines.

My past projects include coupling atmosphere and ocean models over computational grids, including the TeraGrid. My experience with the Weather Forecasting and Research (WRF) and the Regional Ocean Model System(ROMS) have been critical in my current work improving the accuracy and performance of the NOAA tsunami model.
